Claustrophobia - Dental Work

When there is an imbalance in the emotional reaction to an object or situation, a phobia can develop. Phobias can have anywhere from a mild impact on the activities in the life of a person to a major debilitating effect - to the point where a person cannot function.

The following is a case study involving claustrophobia and dental work.

A 49 year old male client had a history of requiring major dental work and hated every moment of being in a dentist's chair. The primary problem was the claustrophobic panic he experienced every time he was fitted with a rubber dam over his mouth. During one of his BodyTalk sessions, claustrophobia was identified as a priority. The balancing treatment was applied, with the added touch of having a hand towel draped over his face (to mimic a claustrophobic situation and intensify the emotional reaction).

About two weeks later this client embarked on a series of root canals and re-crowning of 8 teeth. He happily reported that at no time did he experience any panic when the rubber dam was placed over his mouth. In fact, he was able to complete the entire series of 4 dental treatments in a relaxed frame of mind.
